No holiday in Malta would be complete without a visit to Valletta, the island’s shining capital. There are many hotels in Valletta, but one stood out for solo travellers, groups and families. Palazzo Ignazio is one of the best hotels in Valletta for affordable luxury as it blends modern creature comforts with historical artefacts and authentic designs. Firstly, its prime location makes it easy to explore Valletta, and the rooms all have essential amenities like tea and coffee-making equipment, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, and bottled water. Each morning, The Café – next to Palazzo Ignazio’s reception – serves a continental breakfast including cereals, tomatoes, bread, hams, cheeses, freshly squeezed orange juice and pastries. Also, the Rooftop Bar is fantastic for ocean views and cocktails, while the full-service spa offers a quiet oasis in the city’s heart. The spa has a jacuzzi, a sauna and an outdoor seating area. I recommend letting experienced hands pummel the jet lag out of you in the massage room.

Undoubtedly, one of the best hotels in Malta is The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux, a 17th-century palazzo positioned on Mdina’s bastioned walls. I can’t recommend this hotel enough! It once belonged to Malta’s aristocracy but has been converted into a luxurious 5-star hotel. The Xara Palace’s corridors are filled with antiques, while its walls are adorned with original artworks. Each bedroom has palatial-esque furnishings, and the highly personal, attentive, and relaxed service makes your stay feel extraordinary. If you don’t feel like the King or Queen of Mdina after this, then you certainly will after sampling its award-winning cuisine at its onsite Michelin Star restaurant.
